Discovering the Opportunity

We were introduced to Third Eye Design by a common friend we had in the industry. He knew of our solid work and knew that we would be the perfect fit for the work they were trying to accomplish.

The Need

Third Eye already had an initial product in the market but was interested in correcting bugs, adding features, making the product more robust, and reducing cost for large scale manufacturing.

What We Did

The existing product Third Eye had in the market had an unexpected design flaw that prevented it from working on certain makes and models of motorcycles. Rodinia was able to quickly identify and correct the issue and publish an over the air firmware update to existing customers without the need for a costly hardware swap.

Rodinia also worked with Third Eye to develop specifications for a short term incremental product improvement as well as longer term addition of advanced features. We developed an iOS and Android app from scratch to enable customers to more easily install and interact with the device over bluetooth as well as perform over the air firmware updates. We also developed a cloud back-end that has a customer facing front end as well as customer service / administrative back end.

In a later project phase Rodinia augmented the app and firmware to provide more advanced features and updated the PCB design to be more robust, feature rich, cost effective, and easy to manufacture.

The Results

Today, Third Eye has a world class product that is feature rich, easy to install, less expensive to manufacture, and is produced and distributed all over the world. Check out their product on their website. https://thirdeyedesigninc.com

Kinisi

Discovering the Opportunity

When a friend of ours moved to NYC she found that getting around the city was much easier if she used a kick scooter. She told us about an idea that she had to combine the scooter with a walker.

The Need

An athletic baby boomer who was suffering early arthritis and challenged to walk long distances, could use the scooter to get exercise and also get around town, and when inside at a large indoor site like a museum or store, the user could convert it into a walker which was upright and allowed the the person to stand up straight (eliminating the stigma of a traditional walker).

What We Did

Rodinia engineers met with our client and created system specs for the device. Then we developed some initial concepts. The device has many moving parts and it called for creative thinking so it could be easily collapsed, brakes would be arthritis friendly, it would be lightweight and easy to manage, and it needed to have a slick design which looked less medical and more athletic.

Rodinia then enlisted Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), a top engineering school to find a team of graduate students who would take the project on and refine the specifications. The Rodinia team managed the RIT team and together they produced a product plan for production. Meanwhile, the Rodinia team came up with a name and branding for the product anticipating that it could go to market in Fall, 2020.

The Results

The Kinisi project was paused due to COVID-19. The student team will hand off the CAD drawings and initial prototype materials (some are 3-d printed and others are ordered or manufactured by hand). This project is expected to be completed after the virus is under control and it will have wider applicability as urban dwellers choose to take public transport less and less.

Injection Manifold for Beverages

Discovering the Opportunity

This project was referred to us by a friend who knew of our high-quality work. We had first met at a happy hour for business owners. In a meeting at our offices we learned that our happy hour friend had a great idea to solve a real-life problem.

The Need

The need was to create a device that could inject a liquid from one pressurized cylinder into another using differential pressure.

What We Did

We worked through several concepts and eventually landed on one that was simple, reliable, and easy to manufacture. Several protoypes were created and given to early adopter customers. Rodinia engineers participated on site in the early installs and gathered valuable real-world feedback. After collecting and incorporating customer feedback, designs were refined, and tooling was cut to facilitate high volume manufacturing and increased product margin.

The Results

Today these devices are assembled and tested by Rodinia and shipped all over the world. We fulfill orders to the owner and directly to the customer.

Time & Materials

We work with sensitive information as part of a team. So sensitive we can’t list it here. When you work with us your data is hosted on servers hosted at our office based in the United States, data is backed up via a secure link to an offsite location, never in the cloud.
